FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND FOR LIMELIGHT: ONCE ON THIS ISLAND SHOWCASES AN ENTIRE MULTICULTURAL CAST AND CREATIVE TEAM OF ARTISTS OF COLOR
From Black American, Caribbean And Latino Backgrounds — Signaling The Theatre’s Continued Growth, May 7–24
St. Augustine, Fla., April 3, 2026 - Limelight Theatre is proud to present Once on This Island, the beloved Caribbean-inspired musical, playing on the Mainstage May 7 through May 24, 2026 at the theatre on Old Mission Avenue.
Marking a significant milestone in the theatre’s 35-year history, this production represents the first time Limelight Theatre has brought together a cast and creative team composed entirely of artists of color. Featuring a richly multicultural ensemble—including performers and artists from Black American, Caribbean and Latino backgrounds—the production reflects Limelight’s continued growth and commitment to expanding its artist pool and welcoming a broader range of voices to its stage.
Filled with vibrant music, rhythmic movement and powerful storytelling, Once on This Island promises an unforgettable theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.
This dynamic production brings together a talented group of performers from across Northeast Florida, showcasing the depth and diversity of the region’s arts community. Guided by a passionate creative team, the show blends immersive staging, music and movement to transport audiences to a tropical island where folklore, love and destiny intertwine.
In Once on This Island, Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her divided island. As their worlds collide, Ti Moune embarks on a journey shaped by love, sacrifice and fate—while the island’s gods watch closely, influencing the course of her story. The result is a visually rich and emotionally resonant production that explores themes of class, compassion and the transformative power of hope.
“This production is incredibly special—not only because of the beauty of the story, but because of the voices bringing it to life,” said Sherrie Provence, executive director of Limelight Theatre. “It represents an important moment for our theatre as we continue to grow and create space for a broader range of artists and perspectives. At its core, Once on This Island is about love, community and humanity—and that message feels more relevant than ever.”
