IN THE NATION'S OLDEST CITY, A TIMELESS CLASSIC TAKES THE STAGE: THE SOUND OF MUSIC CLOSES LIMELIGHT THEATRE'S 34TH SEASON
Beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein Classic Features Local Talent, Timeless Music and a Story That Continues to Inspire Generations
St. Augustine, Fla. - June 22, 2026 - In a city known for preserving history and celebrating tradition, Limelight Theatre is bringing one of the most beloved classics in musical theatre to the stage this summer.
The Sound of Music will run July 16 through August 9, serving as the grand finale of Limelight Theatre's 34th Season and offering audiences an opportunity to experience a timeless story that has captivated generations for more than 65 years.
Directed by Joshua Sewell and Isabel Dondero, the production features a talented cast of performers from across Northeast Florida, bringing to life the inspiring story of Maria Rainer, a spirited young woman whose love of music transforms the lives of the von Trapp family during a turbulent chapter in world history.
Filled with iconic songs including "Do-Re-Mi," "My Favorite Things," "Edelweiss," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and "The Sound of Music," the musical remains one of the most enduring and celebrated productions in theatre history.
Based on the true story of the von Trapp family, the show follows Maria as she leaves Nonnberg Abbey to become governess to seven children under the strict care of Captain von Trapp. Through kindness, determination and music, Maria brings joy back into the family's home while helping them navigate the growing threat of Nazi occupation in Austria.
"There's a reason The Sound of Music continues to resonate with audiences decade after decade," said Missy Schmotzer, interim executive director of Limelight Theatre. "Its themes of family, courage, resilience, and hope are universal. As we close our 34th Season, we're excited to share a production that celebrates the enduring power of storytelling and the connections that bring communities together."
Serving as the final production of Limelight Theatre's 34th Season, The Sound of Music offers a fitting conclusion to a year of memorable performances. In St. Augustine, where history is woven into the fabric of everyday life, the beloved musical reminds audiences why certain stories continue to endure—bringing generations together through music, family and hope.
